Cranial Facial Release (CFR) is a non-invasive
chiropractic technique that uses a small medical balloon
inserted into the nasal passages to gently mobilize the
bones of the skull (especially the sphenoid bone). It helps
release tension, improve cerebrospinal fluid flow, and open
nasal airways. We use CFR as a focused option within a
broader chiropractic care plan.
Most patients describe the procedure as causing only mild
pressure or a brief 'popping' sensation similar to having
your ears pop on an airplane. It is generally not considered
painful. Any minor discomfort usually lasts only a few
seconds during the balloon inflations. Many patients feel
immediate relief afterward. Temporary side effects (like
light nasal drip) are rare and typically resolve quickly.
The number of sessions varies depending on your condition
and how long you have had symptoms. Most patients complete a series
of 4 treatments over 2'4 weeks. You will be reassessed at that
time. Dr. Steinhardt will create a personalized plan after your
initial evaluation.
Yes, CFR is considered very safe and gentle when performed by a trained practitioner.
It is commonly used with children who have chronic sinus issues, breathing difficulties,
headaches, or concussion symptoms. The pressure used is adjusted appropriately for age and size.
CFR is often considered an elective procedure
and is not covered by insurance plans. However, FSA plans do
cover CFR treatments. Many patients
pay out-of-pocket (cash-pay). Traditional chiropractic
adjustments may be covered under many insurance plans - please
bring your insurance card so we can verify benefits.
CFR can be helpful for:
Chronic headaches and migraines
Snoring and sleep apnea symptoms
Nasal congestion and sinus issues
Poor nasal breathing / mouth breathing
Brain fog, poor focus, and cognitive fatigue
Recovery support after concussions, TBIs, or head trauma
TMJ/jaw pain and tension
Some cases of dizziness or balance issues related to
cranial tension
Whiplash-related head and neck tension
Tinnitus or ear pressure linked to cranial strain
Breathing difficulties from nasal restriction
Deviated septum
Bell's Palsy
Post-stroke symptoms
It is often used alongside chiropractic care, functional
rehabilitation, and home exercise programs.
Traditional chiropractic focuses on the spine and
extremities. CFR specifically targets the cranial bones and
facial structures using a specialized endo-nasal balloon-assisted
approach. Many patients use CFR as a focused option within a
broader chiropractic care plan.

Discussion of findings and whether chiropractic care,
CFR, or other care is appropriate
If appropriate, your first treatment (many patients
receive gentle care the same day)
Please wear comfortable clothing and bring any relevant
imaging reports or records.

acupuncture, physical therapy, massage, or functional
exercise programs for enhanced results. Dr. Steinhardt is
happy to coordinate care with your other providers.
Yes. We evaluate the neck, upper back, and soft tissue for
strain patterns and guide recovery with gentle chiropractic
care, CFR when appropriate, and targeted home exercises. The
goal is to reduce pain, restore motion, and support healing.
Vertigo can have multiple causes. We evaluate the neck,
cranial tension, and balance-related issues to see if
chiropractic care or CFR may help reduce dizziness and
improve stability. A personalized plan is created after
your exam.
For some patients, tinnitus is linked to neck or cranial
tension that can include TMJ disorders. We assess those areas and may use gentle
adjustments, CFR, and supportive exercise to reduce pressure
and improve nerve function. Results vary by cause.
Yes. CFR is designed to improve nasal airflow and reduce
cranial restrictions that affect breathing. We also assess
posture and soft tissue tension that may contribute to
shallow or restricted breathing.
Some patients feel improvement after the first visit, while
others notice changes over a series of treatments. Timing
depends on your condition, how long you have had symptoms,
and your overall health. A personalized plan is discussed
after your exam.
We typically recommend staying hydrated, avoiding heavy
exertion for the rest of the day, and following any
customized home exercises. If you have specific
post-treatment instructions, we will review them before you
leave.
No referral is required. If you already have imaging or
medical records, please bring them. If additional imaging
is needed, we will discuss it based on your exam findings.
Yes. We provide chiropractic and orthopedic non-surgical
